XML sitemaps serve as a way to communicate directly with the search engines, alerting them to new or changed content very quickly and helping to ensure that the content is indexed faster. XML sitemaps is used in SEO for facilitating indexing. Posting an XML sitemap is kind of like rolling out the red carpet for search engines and giving them a roadmap of the preferred routes through the site.

The purpose of a site map is to spell out your Web site’s central content themes and to show both search engine spiders and your visitors where to find information on your site.
Site Maps can be classifieds in to two types.
1. XML sitemap
2. HTML sitemap

XML sitemap: XML site map google understand but does not understand user.

HTML sitemap: HTML site map user understand but does not understand Google.

Sitemap is a simple map of your website, it gives a complete description of the site and its linking. It should be added to the site as by adding this the credibility of the site increases.

When it comes to the crawling phase of SEO and bot visibility, we often first check what we hold from search engines via robots.txt and meta robots tag usage. ... This allowed search engines the ability to have a buffet of site URLs from any one page on your site. Then along came XML sitemaps.

In SEO there are 2 type of Sitemap. 1st one sitemap.xml file and 2nd one is sitemap.html file.

1) sitemap.xml :- sitemap.xml file is use for google. in xml file have lists the URLs for a website. in it the hole URLs data stored: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. its work more intelligently and allows search engines to crawl the site.

2) sitemap.xml :- its work same as sitemap.xml but its made for human being not for search engine.
